2011 Spring Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon
2011 Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon
Join us for a look at these beautiful wines from one of the most underrated vintages to occur in the Napa Valley in recent memory. After a decade in our library, the Howell Mountain, Mount Veeder and Spring Mountain District Cabernets from the 2011 vintage are singing a powerful song. We have a very limited number of tasting kits available, so don’t hesitate to join Elton and a special guest for a memorable experience.
Robert Parker Jr and Antonio Galloni both agreed in the prefaces to their reviews of the 2011 wines from the Napa Valley that in a cool, damp vintage, the most successful AVA’s in Northern California were Mount Veeder and Howell Mountain, without question. Spring Mountain District was also spared the foggy, misty, damp conditions that were pervasive on the valley floor that summer and fall. Owing to their exceptionally well-drained, rocky soils and breezy conditions that inhibit mold and mildew, the upper reaches of the mountain AVA’s in Napa produced some exceptional wines. The beauty of the 2011 vintage is that after ten years of rest, the wines are showing an exotic perfume on the nose to go with great complexity in the mouth and on the finish. These wines all have time to go, but they are hitting a perfect drinking window at the decade mark.
Spring Mountain District
As always, the most voluptuous, round and sensual of our cabernet offerings. The aromatics on the Spring Mountain 2011 are so intense that you can smell the opened wine from a room away. On Spring, we had the most attrition to the weather in that vintage, so the shaker table, an optical sorter, and hand sorting prior to destemming was critical. The very limited selection of fruit for the Grand Vin produced astounding results. Forest floor, lavender, espresso and dark fruit emanate from the glass.
From 1800’ on Mount Veeder This selection from Robin Williams’ Pym Rae Vineyard makes me nostalgic for the fruit there. The wine is full, dark and youthful with classic cassis rolling forward out of the cedar and chocolate in the mouth. What a bruiser of a cabernet. The wine remains balanced despite its size, and every sip reveals another nuance.
The Howell Mountain harvest was exceptionally late in 2011, and we finished at the end of the second week in November on Howell Mountain with 80 degree temperatures and two weeks of Indian Summer. The wine is classic Howell Mountain with black fruit from thorny stems bursting from the glass. There is a Bordeaux appeal to the Howell Mountain 2011 as the structure is so youthful and the complexity and size of the wine is inspiring.
