June 4, 2021
Pomerol Meets Howell Mountain with special guest Mike Dunn
Featuring the following wines:
2013 Howell Mountain Merlot
2014 Howell Mountain Merlot
2015 Howell Mountain Merlot
Thank you for joining us at this lively tasting and discussion of three glorious Merlot based wines from our library. Elton and Mike discussed why Howell Mountain remains the best place outside of the right bank of the Gironde to grow this noble variety. Our 2013, 2014, and 2015 merlots were on full display after some time in the cellar, and for those who retain doubts as to Merlot’s ability to rival Cabernet Sauvignon for size, scope, cellar-worthiness and complexity: this is your tasting.
Mike Dunn is a Howell Mountain treasure and one of the most accomplished winemakers in the Napa Valley. Mike will certainly have an interesting take on the wines, rock and roll, custom bicycles and making wine in the shadow of his legendary father.

2013 Merlot Howell Mountain
After nine years of blending this gorgeous fruit completely into the Cabernet, we finally decided to make a small amount of Merlot from our estate vineyard. The 13 vintage was a terrific vintage on Howell Mountain, though not as bombastic as on the valley floor. The wine is supple and balanced with tremendous breadth and length on the palate.
2014 Merlot Howell Mountain
If we could have a Merlot vintage to emulate on Howell Mountain every year, it would be 2014. The wine bursts from the glass and contains the dark bramble berry fruit, stone accents and pepper that are the hallmarks of Howell Mountain reds. The wine is still so youthful that it would be hard to pick it out as seven years old in a blind tasting.
2015 Merlot Howell Mountain
The 2015 vintage marks the appearance of Candlestick Vineyard Merlot into the blend, and instantly the wine gained structure, depth and gravitas. We made more of the 2015 Merlot than we traditionally do because we had not yet established fruit contracts, but we are happy to have a great library of this one. A wine for the ages.
